Whether it is alcohol, internet or food addictions there are certain behaviors that warrant attention. These behaviors alert you to the possibility of a problem. One of the biggest red flags of addiction is neglecting responsibilities. Using money to buy drugs, alcohol or even video games when rent and utility bills are piling up signifies a problem. There is no good excuse for neglecting work, friends or responsibilities regardless if it’s for an illegal substance or a simple hobby.
Another warning sign is embarrassment or hiding the activity. If you are concealing how much you drink, eat or play video games then you may have a problem. You should not need to conceal healthy behavior and if a person lies about their behavior this signifies they deem it undesirable.
If you are a parent and have suspicions that your child may have an addiction there are also certain warning signs you should look out for. First and foremost, notice sudden behavioral changes. If you have a child who was top of their class, dressed appropriately and had a calm demeanor and three weeks later they are slovenly, sleeping all the time and abrasive you should ask some questions. At best they are turning into the stereotypical rebellious teen at worst they are going down the wrong path.
If you recognize many of these symptoms in anyone you know or in yourself then seek help. If these are symptoms and actions you see in yourself then go to a local counseling or addition center in your area.
Also take advantage of phone hotlines and internet addiction resources available to you.
If you find this type of behavior with your loved one then educate yourself at the resources listed above and talk to the person in question. The most important thing is to not accuse but state your feelings about the situation. You should expect a sense of denial since no one thinks they have a problem. If your concerns are stated clearly and calmly in a nonthreatening manner then you are more likely to get through to your loved one.
